Nice Bounce Back But Still Second Best

As I predicted on Friday, the Yankees bounced back nicely from being humiliated by Boston.  They won all three games over the weekend against Cleveland, but once again, they were shown up.  Cleveland was watching the hit batters and the lack of retaliation against Boston for sure.  They came into this game throwing at Yankee hitters and hitting them on both Friday evening and Saturday.   The only difference is that their pitchers weren’t able to shut down the Yankee hitters like Boston did.      I predict that this will be a continuing trend until the Yankees pitchers start striking first.   They need to do this to let other teams know that they will not put up with this kind of nonsense and they never did that against either Boston or Cleveland.  It’s nice to win a couple of games, but let’s face it, Boston is a much better team right now.   This Yankee team has a long way to go before they can be considered the best team in the division, let alone compete in the post season.  It’s Texas in town after the finale of the Cleveland series tonight and look for more hit batters from the Texas staff.  You can count on it.

Takin’ care of business

Well, the Yankees did what they were supposed to do.  They took 6 of 8 from Cleveland and KC.  Now the fun starts.  With a 3 game series at Tampa and the Rays 2 back, it should be a fun weekend.  Tampa Bay always seems to play inspired baseball against the Yankees and you can tell they really want to win these games.  They are a very good team that plays hard and is fundamentally sound.  I am looking forward to these tough games on the road, as kind of a measuring stick for where the Yankees are.   I give them credit for what they have done thus far, but there is a lot of season left and it starts tonight in Tampa.

We’ll take it

It is often the case that the team plays a bit flat on the first day of a road trip.  I guess that can be attributed to the travel and adjusting to life on the road.  Last night was a classic example.  The offense did basically nothing with the exception of homers by Swisher and Granderson.  That proved to be enough as Javy Vazquez went seven plus strong innings.  The Yankees need to do as they did against KC and take three of four.  Nothing against Cleveland, but they aren’t very good and first place teams should beat them three of four.  That wasn’t a very exciting game, but a win is a win is a win.

Color me skeptical

So the Yankees managed to win three of four from Cleveland.  Excuse me if I’m not doing cartwheels.  In every single game except one, they struggled to score runs until the seventh innning. And the one game that they did score plenty of runs early was an ugly over managed mess of a loss.  I’m glad that they won three out of four in this series, because they needed that, but the way they did it still leaves cause for concern if you ask me.  Let’s see if they can manage to get some runs before the seventh inning against B’more.  Considering how poorly they have played of late, they are not in a bad position thus far.  If they ever start hitting on all cylinders like last year, watch out because this team will explode.

What a difference a day makes Part 3

After an ugly loss on Saturday, the Yankees bounced back with a come from behind 7-3 victory and once again find themselves only 3.5 games out of first.  A.J. Burnett saved us all from another ugly bullpen outing by going 8 strong innings.  I am still not convinced that this team is hitting on all cylinders as they are very inconsistent and very often don’t do anything at all offensively until the late innings.  We will see what today brings, but they need to win this and take three of four from Cleveland.  A split with this team is simply unacceptable.

What a difference a day makes Part 2

Once again, it was like two different teams between Thursday and Friday night’s games.  After an ugly loss in Minnesota, the Yankees bounced back nicely on Friday night against Cleveland.  Combine that with both Tampa and Boston losses and it was a great night in the Bronx.  After a tough week (3-3), this once again proved that the baseball season is a marathon, with lots of hills and valleys.  The Yankees will be fine in the long run.  Every team goes through rough patches and this team is no different.  They are a very good team and I expect they will at some point catch fire.   They still haven’t been hitting on all cylinders yet this year and they’re only 3.5 back of Tampa.  Should be a fun summer.
