Nice comeback win at home

Well that was exactly what this team needed.  After all the injuries and losing four of their last five, they needed A-Rod, Cano and Texeira to step up.  They did just that.  Cano looked much better at the plate and appears to be heating up again.  Texeira had a couple of hits and he has looked much better as well.  And what can you say about A-Rod’s grand slam.  It was exactly what the team needed after Girardi tried to give the game away.

I have stated before that there is no way that Damaso Marte has earned the right to be in a game when it is close and demands consistency.  He just hasn’t shown that consistency and exactly half of the inherited runners have scored when he is brought in.  No way I have him in the game in that situation.  I would’ve taken my chances with Burnett to get one more out.  Girardi has way too much faith in this guy and he hasn’t earned it.  I say make him pitch his way back into these situations by bringing him in when nothing is at stake until he finds his groove.  Regardless, A-Rod rescured Girardi from the doghouse with his blast.

And what about Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli?  With his speed, I don’t see any extended slumps in Gardner’s future.  Cervelli, on the other hand, I beleive has been a bit lucky, but he sure seems to hit well with runners in scoring position.  Who knows?  Maybe he has figured things out at this stage of his career.  His minor league numbers wouldn’t indicate he could hit like this, but stranger things have happened.  Anyway, it is fun watching these two home grown products produce with all the whining about how much money the Yankees spend.   The core of this team is still home grown and these two just add a couple more pieces to the puzzle.

A Great Comeback and Girardi throws it away

Let’s start with Javier Vazquez.  This guy is obviously a head case.   He will never be able to pitch in NY as he just doesn’t have the mental toughness.  If I were the Yankees, I would put him in the pen until he gets himself together.  At this point, almost anyone could do a better job than this guy.  As if it wasn’t bad enough that he gave up 3 home runs and five runs in 3 innings, then the Yankees battle back to take the lead and Girardi over manages his way to a loss.  The later innings of this game was classic Girardi over thinking and managing a win into a loss. No way in the world should Damaso Marte be in any game in a critical situation.  The guy is too inconsistent and unreliable.  When he entered the game, even I knew he wouldn’t hold the lead and he held true to form.  If I know this, why doesn’t Girardi?  And then there was leaving Thames in against Putz, but pinch hitting a lefty for a lefty in Johnson instead of Winn.  I would love to hear his “logic” on those moves.  So far, that is at least 3 games where questionable managing has cost the Yankees a game they could have won. One of the marks of a great manager is knowing when to leave things alone.  Girardi has yet to learn this very important lesson. This one was ugly after a great game last night.

Vazquez rides again

OK, so now I have watched this guy for four straight starts and four straight times he has stunk up the joint.  Even the game he won was ugly.  Today they spotted him a three run lead and he pissed it away.  Couldn’t even get out of the fourth inning.  Absolutely pathetic.  This guy looks exactly like the guy that left here after the debacle against Boston.  He has no confidence in his stuff and looks like he is either unable or unwilling to attack the strike zone.  The other “jewel” in this game was Marte.  He has been horribly inconsistent in his time with the Yankees and today he looked a lot like he has most of the time.  Wild and hittable.  These two guys need to go as they seem to be the only ones on this team that are not performing.  Vazquez obviously is just one of those guys that can’t pitch in NY and Marte is just bad.  3-3 on a tough west coast swing isn’t bad, but it could easily have been 5-1 with better pitching.  They still have three in B’more so I predict they win two of three and come home at 5-4 from a tough 9 game road trip.  All in all not too bad, but Vazquez had better figure things out quickly or the fans will boo him right out of NY.

Rut

Not much to say about the last couple of games.  Friday night was a yawner except for Jeter’s record breaking hit.  Damaso Marte was horrible and it looks to me like his velocity is way down.  He does not look like the same pitcher that came over from Pittsburgh last year.  My guess is his shoulder is still hurt or weak.  Saturday was another stinker by Burnett.  Let’s hope he can get his act together before the playoffs.  This team has been playing very well for a very long stretch and they were due for a couple of clunkers.  Nothing to worry about, they will bounce back and finish strong.  Should be a fun October.

Clunker by Burnett but Offense to the Rescue

A.J. Burnett stunk up the joint again.  It’s time for him to extract his head from his posterior as his problems are all mental.  It looked to me last night that he was not bearing down mentally.  He was just throwing the ball up there with no confidence or conviction and with what the Yankees are paying him, they deserve a better effort.  You can’t guarantee results, but you have to give it everything you’ve got every time out and I’m not convinced that Burnett did that last night.  He obviously was struggling, but his concentration appeared to be off as well.  And there is no excuse for failing to cover first base.  It cost him any chance he might have had at getting a win.  I expect more from him from here on out.  Like I said, no guarantees for results, but I expect a better all around effort from him.  On a positive note, the Yankees scored nine runs and hit five home runs and won the game despite Burnett.  Great job in coming back twice to take this one. And great job by the bullpen.  Good to see Damaso Marte back in the mix again.  Let’s hope Burnett gets things figured out as the Yanks will need him at his best for the playoffs.

Clunker Against Texas

Not exactly a stirring opening to the homestand.  Joba was horrible again.  They need to get him straightened out and quickly.  He has looked absolutely terrible three times out in a row.  Having said that the Yankees had a chance to win this one in the ninth until they mysteriously had Nick Swisher attempt to bunt with runners on first and second and no outs.  He popped up, then Melky quickly lined into a double play and it was all over.  What in the world was Girardi thinking?   Swisher has an OBP of almost .400 and almost never grounds into a double play.  Let the guy hit for crying out loud.  There were no outs!   Having said that, it was a nice attempt at a comeback after Joba dug them a big hole.  Gaudin pitched well enough in relief and Marte looked pretty good as well.  Not the end of the world here.  I fully expect that they will bounce back and win tonight and tomorrow.
